Did You Hear? There’s A New Questioneer!

Sofia Valdez, Future Prez will be published on US Election Day, November 5, 2019

Andrew Smith, Senior Vice President and Publisher of Abrams Children’s Books, announced today the forthcoming publication of Sofia Valdez, Future Prez, the latest picture book from acclaimed author Andrea Beaty and UK based illustrator David Roberts. Sofia Valdez, Future Prez joins the pantheon of her fellow Questioneers and their New York Times bestselling picture books—Iggy Peck, Architect; Rosie Revere, Engineer; and Ada Twist, Scientist—that now have over 2.5 million copies in print worldwide. Publishing on the US Election Day, November 5, 2019, Sofia Valdez, Future Prez addresses the topical themes of community building, activism, bravery, and leadership. It will have an announced first printing of 500,000 copies.

Meet Sofia Valdez, a Mexican American second-grader at Blue River Creek Elementary School. Every morning, her Abuelo walks Sofia to school . . . until the day that Abuelo hurts his ankle at a local landfill and can no longer do so. Sofia misses her Abuelo and wonders what she can do about the dangerous Mount Trashmore. Then she gets an idea: The town can turn the slimy mess into a park! She brainstorms and plans and finally works up the courage to go to City Hall—only to be told by a clerk that she can’t build a park because she’s just a kid. Sofia is down but not out, and she sets out to prove what one kid can do.

“Since Ada Twist, Scientist’s publication in 2016, readers everywhere have been eagerly waiting for a new Questioneer. We’re thrilled that the wait is over!” said Andrew Smith. “Sofia Valdez, Future Prez is an inspiring story about standing up for what you believe in, even if the odds are against you. We think that the millions of young readers who’ve been encouraged to ‘Read. Question. Think.’ will agree that Sofia Valdez deserves our vote in 2019!”

“I am so excited about this new adventure,” said Andrea Beaty. “Each Questioneer’s story explores a theme based on the character’s personality. Iggy explores passion; Rosie is about perseverance; Ada is about curiosity. Sofia’s tale is about bravery and how each person has the power to make a difference. Including kids!”

A multifaceted marketing campaign for Sofia Valdez, Future Prez is planned including a consumer advertising campaign, retail promotion, School & Library marketing promotion and wide-ranging social media outreach.
