Our pick of the bookstores this week is not really a bookshop in the traditional sense, but a cute gallery that stocks a great selection of art books, next door to a pile of Roman ruins that is now a cat colony!
Fox Gallery first and foremost foregrounds art, with a regularly updated collection of affordable art ranging from the classic to the new and unexpected. They share our love of Keith Haring, but you could also pick up a framed cover of The New Yorker or a drawing by a little-known artist; it was here that we were introduced to Italian cartoonist Gud and his new series of cats who have now taken up residence on the International Sales desk of A&CB Towers. There are also stacks of great gift ideas for the artistically inclined. But of course, most important to us is the books – Fox Gallery offers the best of international publishing and a great selection of visually appealing tomes to complement the carefully curated art.
Our favourite kind of bookshops go the extra mile to offer events and a personalised service that can’t compete with online retailers – and Fox Gallery offers bucketloads of these, with frequent free gigs and signings. Follow them on Facebook for invitations to cartoonists’ birthday parties and details of discounts on big names, and if you find yourself in Rome, stroll down from Piazza Navona and you won’t be able to leave empty handed. When in Rome, do as the Romans do and have a side of jazz with your book browsing.
